What made you want to become a rep?
I transferred to Mid and West Wales five years ago. There was no FBU rep at my station. Having started my career in Essex, seeing the benefit of the union and how important it is to have a functioning branch I stepped up to be the rep – and haven’t looked back!
What is your proudest moment as a rep?
I am proud of helping members in Mid and West Wales to have a voice against fire service management who have chosen to stop listening to the frontline. As part of our ongoing dispute with management we organised a rally which was attended by over 200 people. Seeing a coachload of FBU members turning up at headquarters with placards was fantastic!
What have you learned during your most recent campaign?
Use all the resources available. The help and support we have received from regional and national officials, and staff - including national organiser Matt Partridge and the campaign/communications team - has been invaluable.
Who are your working-class heroes?
I admire anyone who stands up and does the right thing. Standing up for what is right can be a bit scary, and may be lonely at times, but the people that do are heroes.
What piece of advice would you give a new rep?
Firstly, WELL DONE for taking on the role! Secondly, don’t fear the imposter syndrome. All officials were new in role once and the members you represent will be super pleased that you have taken on the role.

What was the last conversation you had that made you think differently about something?
As part of our campaign we have been visiting retained stations to build engagement and recruitment. The threat of stations being downgraded is a massive worry for retained crews. Having a van, parked in a lock-up which can only carry out an exterior attack at fires is a huge concern for crews who want to protect the service they provide to their communities. We need to do more to stand up for our retained members.
