Climate change adaptation report

An influential House of Commons committee has agreed with the FBU that cuts to firefighter numbers could undermine future emergency responses to flooding.

The Environmental Audit Committee used findings from the union’s Inundated: The lessons of recent flooding for the fire and rescue service report, published in February, which found that: “With 6,500 fewer firefighters now than at the time of the 2007 floods, the UK today is less flood-resilient than it was just a few years ago, with an over-reliance on volunteers who for understandable reasons may not always be available.”
