The FBU has won resounding support at Labour Party conference for the recruitment of 5000 firefighters and the introduction of nationally recognised wildfire training.
Support for the union has been evident throughout Labour conference and on the final day firefighters secured backing for major investment in recruitment, the correct PPE and acknowledgement that the fire service had been decimated by 14 years of Tory led austerity.
The union will now take this support of Labour conference and make the case that the firefighters and wildfire resilience must be front and centre of Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s plan to rewire the British state.
Steve Wright FBU general secretary said:
“The clear message of this Labour Conference under Andy Burnham’s leadership is one of change, optimism and an urgent need to create a new economy where we are more resilient and more equal.
“Firefighters are central to the country’s safety and civil infrastructure. We need to be properly prepared for wildfires, floods and other emergencies that we face.
“Only by investment and a clear plan to improve the lives of working class communities that our members serve every hour of every day, can we be successful as a country and ensure that Labour win the next general election.”
