Shaka Hislop, former Premier League footballer and president of Show Racism the Red Card, on the importance of persevering with anti-racist education
As I reflect on the last year, the racist riots that shook the UK last summer serve as a reminder of how far we still have to go. It was a frightening time for all of us, including firefighters on the frontline putting out fires set by far-right arsonists.
We were forced to confront the ugliest side of humanity, recognise the fragility of peace, and of progress. And how easily violence against people of colour is excused by so many. But it also served as a reminder as to why we wake up each day determined to change the world.
Those who have supported Show Racism the Red Card over the years know that anti racist educational work is life-changing, but it can test you in ways that progress really shouldn’t.
We have learned how to find moments of silence to regroup, finding lessons in the darkest of times. Let this be no different.
As role models in our communities – footballers or firefighters – we have the power to stand up against racism, and empower others to do so.
Whilst funding is hard to come by, we have always managed to grow our organisation to empower more people to challenge racism in sport and far beyond. This isn’t new. I have no doubt we’ll do so again with the Fire Brigades Union and others by our side.
And lobbying efforts, urging the government to include anti-racism education as part of the national educational curriculum, must go on.
Let 2024 not be defined by bigotry, but by how our communities stood together.
