FBU member Barry Martin died on Friday 27 January from injuries he sustained while attending a major fire at the former department store Jenners in Edinburgh.
His death shocked and saddened the firefighting community.
A minute’s silence was held for him at 11am on Monday 13 February across the UK, with firefighters lining up outside fire stations to mark the moment.
His funeral took place in St Giles Cathedral on Friday 17 February, the route along Edinburgh’s Royal Mile was lined with firefighters paying final respects to a fallen brother.
Barry was based at the McDonald Road fire station in Edinburgh, and was the first Scottish firefighter to die while on duty since Ewan Williamson, who died after being injured at the Balmoral Bar in Edinburgh in 2009.
FBU general secretary Matt Wrack said: “Our hearts go out to Barry's family, colleagues and friends, and to all those who mourn his loss.
“Barry was a dedicated firefighter and a well-loved member of the firefighting community. We are very proud that he was a member of our union. Like so many firefighters, he put himself at risk to save the lives of others.”
He was just 38 years old and leaves behind his wife Shelley and twin boys Oliver and Daniel, aged 8
