Water rescue training is vital for firefighters, but comes with risks, particularly from waterborne illnesses and dry suit issues.

Exposure to pathogens in rivers or lakes can cause serious diseases:

LEPTOSPIROSIS:

Found in water contaminated by animal urine, can lead to severe complications including liver damage.

GASTROINTESTINAL INFECTIONS:

Pathogens like E. coli and norovirus can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhoea, and vomiting.

SKIN INFECTIONS:

Cuts can become infected by waterborne bacteria, leading to serious conditions such as cellulitis.

Dry suits are crucial for warmth and dryness but require proper maintenance and usage:

FIT AND COMFORT:

Ensure the dry suit fits well—not too tight or too loose. Do not train without a proper fit.

REGULAR INSPECTIONS:

Check for leaks, tears, and seal integrity before each use.

PROPER TRAINING:

Learn donning and doffing techniques to avoid accidents. Employers must recognise inherent dangers and implement stringent safety measures during training. Discuss any concerns with your union representative.
