The FBU has had multiple wins on pensions in the courts. This will mean substantial compensation for thousands of firefighters.
The union is fighting hard to overcome a variety of bureaucratic and legal obstacles, and to get the money paid as quickly as possible.
Solicitor Ivan Walker, who has worked tirelessly for firefighters’ pensions, has now retired. As a result, all current Injury to Feelings claims are being transferred to the care of Thompsons solicitors.
The FBU will continue to cover members’ costs. Around 6,000 people – those who applied in 2015 and are registered claimants in England and Wales (first wave) – should now have received a letter that will enable the process for them to reach the next stage.
Members who registered claims in 2020 (second wave) will receive letters in due course.
It is vital that members read all correspondence carefully, and follow the instructions contained in it.
As these were legal claims submitted on behalf of individual members, only those members who registered a claim, are therefore registered as claimants in this case (in the first or second waves) and will be eligible for compensation.
