As firefighters rallied outside, Nottinghamshire council reversed £2m of cuts to the local fire service.
FBU members in the region won this U-turn by taking action against the threat. Planned cuts would have seen several fire stations lose firefighters, cover time and appliances.
After the initial announcement of plans for the cuts, members attended a meeting of the combined fire authority, calling for the proposals to be shelved and demanding local authorities join the union in asking for greater investment.
Disappointingly at the time, the fire authority railroaded its proposals through with only a few votes against.
Immediately after this meeting FBU members, together with supportive local councillors, began mobilising, building a public presence on the streets.
Months of lobbying and protesting concluded with a meeting attended by MPs from across the county, alongside the FBU leadership, union members, the chief fire officer and the chair of the authority. This proved effective, with the fire authority subsequently voting to stop the cuts.
