The FBU is aware that officer members who utilise either lease or provided cars are facing detrimental changes to the tax arrangements that arise from recent changes in legislation and HMRC regulations.
In short, these changes will result in affected members no longer being able to deduct business mileage from their taxable benefit. These changes were quite unexpected and notification of the impact of the change has only recently been notified by HMRC.
The matter is under consideration by the Executive Council who is working closely with the FBU Officers’ National Committee to deal with this matter, including assessing the impact arising from different vehicle-provision arrangements between fire and rescue services.
As part of our commitment to represent firefighters of all ranks and in all roles, we are exploring avenues to assist those members, primarily officers, affected by what can only be described as a stealth tax.
