Dear Brother / Sister,

LETTER TO NATIONAL EMPLOYERS OF THE NJC: MAINTENANCE OF PAY FOR RETAINED DUTY SYSTEM PERSONNEL

I have written today to the national employers registering a claim for maintenance of pay for all fire and rescue service employees who have a retained duty system contract.

The claim reads as below:

MAINTENANCE OF PAY FOR RETAINED DUTY SYSTEM PERSONNEL DURING THE COVID-19 HEALTH CRISIS

The FBU wishes to make a claim on behalf of all fire and rescue service employees who have a retained duty system contract that their full level of pay be maintained during the health crisis. As you will be aware, these personnel have seen their fire and rescue service earnings reduced as a consequence of, for example, cessation or near-cessation of activities such as community fire safety protection activities arising from the need for social distancing.

This exacerbates the problem faced by these personnel whose other income streams from other sources - invariably referred to as ‘primary employment’ being reduced or in many cases not being received at all arising from the health crisis.

A successful outcome to this claim will a. ensure fair treatment for these personnel and b. go a long way to maximise the retention of these personnel in employment as firefighters. We propose that the level of pay be calculated in accordance with Appendix C, paragraph C of the ‘Grey Book.’

An early agreement on this matter would be in the interests of us all.

Best wishes

Yours sincerely,

MATT WRACK
General Secretary
