The FBU recognises that there is a serious threat for firefighters in relation to cancer in the workplace. This initial guidance document has been produced to highlight the basic principles that you should follow to try and prevent unnecessary contamination before, during and after incidents.
FBU officials will be asked to raise these issues with management and at health and safety committee meetings. Some fire and rescue authorities have already taken steps to address this - our aim is that it will soon be on the agenda in every brigade.
This is only initial advice, we have got a long way to go if we are going to minimise the threat of cancer in the fire service. The FBU is looking at medium and longer term options. As a member you can start to make a difference today by adopting the principles suggested in this document.
