Politicians are quick to praise the emergency services for heroic interventions at major fires, terrorist attacks, flooding and other incidents. This is most recently highlighted following the heroic response to the Grenfell Tower disaster.
The Queens Speech is the perfect opportunity for the Westminster government to demonstrate its commitment to firefighters and the fire and rescue service by reversing the cuts imposed in recent years and investing in its future. Immediately this means:
• Stopping the planned cuts already scheduled to 2020
• Providing funding to recruit firefighters across the UK
• Giving firefighters a pay rise
