Conference notes with concern the statement to the House of Commons on 1st March 2007 from the Chancellor regarding public sector pay. The government’s intention to restrict public sector pay increases to below 2% for 2007 will increase hardship in our public services. In relation to the Fire and Rescue Service, this approach follows four years of rapid change. Conference believes the Fire and Rescue Service would benefit from a period of stability and notes that on this basis the Executive Council has lodged our formal claim with the employers that the pay formula agreed under the 2003 Pay and Conditions Agreement should be applied for 2007. Should the employers choose to de-stabilise the service by refusing to pay the increase determined by the operation of the formula without detrimental changes to conditions of service, then the Executive Council are instructed to fully consult with members on all options, including strike action.
