Fire Brigades Union general secretary Matt Wrack has issued a statement following the resignation of Liz Truss, on behalf of the union:
As prime minister, Liz Truss has plunged the UK into further political and economic chaos. It will be working people who pay the price the longer this continues. Living standards are plummeting and there is currently no light at the end of the tunnel. This follows 12 years of attacks on workers' wages, jobs and conditions and the wrecking of our public services.
Truss had no mandate from the electorate and nor will anyone else foisted on the British people by the Tory party.
There must be an immediate general election. We need a mass movement of protest to ensure we get one.
