The FBU's DECON campaign has been featured on BBC South Today.
The DECON campaign aims to help firefighters protect themselves from fire contaminants, which it is thought could be linked to various cancers and other diseases.
The South Today report spoke to FBU member Steve Burns, who was diagnosed with bladder cancer.
He said "More people have died from cancer than anything else I know of in my fifteen years in the fire service. I've had eminent surgeons tell me that my occupation was likely to have caused my disease".
Also commenting, FBU Southern regional secretary Mark Chapman, said "What we're looking for firefighters to do is make sure that their fire kit is laundered, especially after a fire".
The DECON campaign has now rolled out across the country, with branches holding training sessions and posters and stickers going up in fire stations.
Furthermore, many chief fire officers have "engaged positively" with the campaign, with some working together with local FBU reps on delivering DECON training resources.
