The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) is looking at potential compensation claims for members who suffered unlawful age discrimination following the 2015 attacks on firefighter pensions. The union is asking all affected members who did not file a claim in 2015 to register on the FBU website.
The action comes as a result of the FBU winning a significant victory in 2019 on pension provision for members who were discriminated against on the grounds of their age.
The FBU is now looking at potential claims to compensate members for the financial hardship and also distress, upset and anger – described by lawyers as “injury to feelings” – that may have been caused.
Members who registered a claim in 2015 do not have to do anything unless they wish to raise any particular circumstances that they want to be considered. These may include examples of financial hardship or distress caused by unlawful discrimination.
Those who have not already filed a claim need to do so before 30 June 2020 to enable the FBU to action claims on their behalf. This is a simple process involving two questionnaires available on the FBU website.
There are two separate questionnaires; one for members of the Firefighters’ Pension Schemes; and another for members of the Local Government Pension Scheme.
All FBU members affected by unlawful age discrimination need to follow the steps outlined on the pensions claim page. Please follow the steps carefully and read the explanation provided before filling in the questionnaire.
In April, the FBU also filed legal proceedings against the government over a separate issue involving the withholding of pension benefits from thousands of members.
