Safer, stronger, together

February 14, 2020
Safer-stronger-together

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) has launched exciting new membership recruitment tools for use by officials, including a presentation and membership pack.

The tools have been designed using feedback from new recruits who shared their experiences of their own initial recruitment sessions. A task group of Executive Council members, regional secretaries and brigade organisers from across the UK worked together to create a new and engaging presentation and membership packs.

The ‘Safer, Stronger, Together’ presentation traces the FBU’s campaigning and achievements in improving conditions for firefighters and control staff, including health and safety, working hours, and pay.

Video stories from firefighter David Badillo, firefighter Andy Adams and Rebecca Williamson, the sister of firefighter Ewan Williamson who tragically lost his life while tackling a fire in Edinburgh in 2009, share their experiences of how the FBU supported them through difficult times.

The FBU has a very high density of members compared to other unions, but members are never taken for granted. Continuing to recruit and engage with potential members is essential for a strong union, and the FBU is hopeful that the new tools will further increase membership.

Tam McFarlane, FBU national officer, said:

“We want new recruits to know that, as a member of the FBU, the union will always be there to support them. This package of tools really sends the message that we’re safer and stronger if we stand together – and that can only be achieved by being part of the FBU.

“We’re really excited for officials to start using the presentation and look forward to welcoming new members!”

FBU London South West area organiser Leoni Munslow, who took part in the task and finish group, said:

“Initial recruitment sessions are often the first time that firefighters find out about the FBU, so it’s vital that they know what the FBU can do for them. This new presentation is another fantastic tool for our officials to use to really drive home the message that the FBU is the only union that will support and fight for firefighters.”

New membership packages are now available for FBU representatives to use. Please contact Tam McFarlane on [email protected] for more information.
