Fire Brigades Union lottery donates £20k to help Grenfell youth survivors

The Firefighters 100 Lottery, set up by the Fire Brigades Union one year ago to help good causes, is donating £20k to three charities helping young survivors of the Grenfell Tower Tragedy.

The monies will be presented tomorrow (Thursday 23rd November) to the charities Kids on the Green and the Dale Youth Boxing Club.  Another charity, Solidarity Sports, are also being awarded funds from the lottery.

A giant cheque for £5k will be presented to Kids on the Green, 3-5 Crowthorne Road, W10 6RP at 11am on Thursday 23rd November, and another for £10k to the Dale Youth Boxing club in Ladbroke Grove at approximately 11.45. The Fire Brigades Union’s London Treasurer Lucy Masoud will present the cheques.

The Kids on the Green charity use art therapy and circus workshops to encourage the children who survived Grenfell to express their grief.  She said: “Kids on the Green offers a safe and supportive environment for these children to express themselves, where they are surrounded by caring professionals.  One little girl learning circus skills hadn’t spoken a word about her friend who passed in the fire until she grabbed hold of a hoola hoop and started talking.  This is important for these children – bottling it all up is not healthy.”

The charity will spend the money on heaters for the room they use, art therapy equipment, volunteers, and on birthday parties for children whose lives have been turned upside down by the tragedy.

The Dale Youth Boxing Club was previously run from the lower floors of Grenfell Tower itself.  It has now re-opened in Ladbroke Grove.  Firefighter David Badillo, who was part of the rescue operation at Grenfell and who will be present at the cheque handover tomorrow, is a former user of the Dale Youth boxing club.  He said: “It will be fantastic to see it all up and running again.  It was a great place.  I used to love going there.”

A cheque for £5k will be presented at a later date to a third charity, Solidarity Sport, who are running The Hashim Family Legacy, a fund set up by relatives of the Hashim family who were killed in the Grenfell fire.  The money is going to help young people in the area to achieve their dreams and aspirations.

FIREFIGHTER 100 LOTTERY TICKETS COST JUST £1 EACH.

CASH PRIZES ARE PAID EACH WEEK.
