Michael Nicholas, secretary of the FBU’s black & ethnic minority members (B&EMM) section, has been awarded an MBE in the 2017 Queen’s birthday honours list for services to the fire brigade and to the black and ethnic minority community in London. He is the first black FBU official to receive the award.
The honours recognise people who have made achievements in public life and who have committed themselves to serving and helping the country.
Nicholas, who joined the London Fire Brigade in January 1990, said: “I am so proud and humbled that the work of the union’s B&EMM section has been recognised for trying to make our country a better place to live and work for everyone. My family are thrilled at the award but this is wonderful news for the whole of the union.
“I dedicate this honour to all of the black and ethnic minority members who have supported me throughout my time as their senior representative. Especially those who have stood beside me as we work to create a fire and rescue service that is equal and inclusive for all.
“The FBU has a long and proud history of fighting for equality and diversity in the UK fire and rescue service. Long may it continue.”
