The Fire Brigades Union is urging its members to take part in a survey to find the most effective ways to assist firefighters experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The confidential survey has been created by retired Northern Ireland firefighter John Langtry and the results will be used as the basis of a PhD research project at Ulster University.
It is hoped that firefighters who have suffered from PTSD, as well as those who have not, complete the survey in order to get the broadest picture possible.
PTSD involves developing strong feelings of anxiety after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. It is a potentially severe and long-term mental health problem.

The FBU’s Mental Health at Work guide published last year highlighted PTSD and the union is undertaking its own research into the condition.
