The Fire Brigades Union have endorsed Tony Lloyd to be the next Mayor of Greater Manchester citing his firm commitment to trade union values.
Lloyd, who currently serves as the region's Police and Crime Commissioner, is in a tightly run race with former government ministers Andy Burnham and Ivan Lewis to clinch the Labour party nomination to contest the election in May 2017.
Kevin Brown, the FBU’s executive council member for the north west, said: “Tony will make an outstanding Mayor for all of Greater Manchester. He knows the region inside out and is by far the best candidate.
“As a former member of the FBU’s parliamentary group he gets the challenges that firefighters face and the pressure that our service is under. The Tories have disgracefully put the public at risk by cutting one in four frontline firefighters in Greater Manchester. Tony will bring the fight to the government and secure a better deal for our city.”
Tony Lloyd has represented Manchester in parliament for nearly 30 years and was a member of the FBU’s parliamentary group, giving the union a greater impact on fire and rescue service policy.
