The Fire Brigades Union has vowed to continue challenging the public sector pay cap after the government confirmed that fire and rescue service staff will receive a pay rise of just 1% for the fifth consecutive year.
The FBU say the situation is untenable and that they are working with other trade unions on how the movement, as a whole, can challenge the government's agenda.
In an all members circular Matt Wrack, FBU general secretary, writes that the FBU’s executive council “is well aware of the growing anger on the issue of pay. This was raised and debated at our conference in May. Conference was clear that the FBU would need to step up our campaign on this issue in the coming months.”
“As has been reported in various circulars, the union has engaged in a series of discussions with the employers on the roles of firefighters and the service. This involves five NJC work-streams which are considering various aspects of FRS work or potential work. These discussions continue and have not concluded.”
