The Fire Brigades Union has agreed to an extension of the emergency medical responding (EMR) trials that are currently underway in over 30 fire and rescue services.
The union says the extension, which will now run until February 2017, is needed in order to fully examine the trials and evaluate whether EMR is compatible with the work of the fire and rescue service.
In a video update Matt Wrack, FBU general secretary, says that more data needs to be collected from the trials – some of which have only been running for a few months - before the union can publish a full analysis to see whether lives have been saved as a result and explore operational issues that need to be addressed, such as training and procedures.
