Delegates at the Fire Brigades Union’s 89th conference debated the issue of unsafe duty systems.
Neil Carbutt, brigade secretary of the FBU in South Yorkshire, highlighted the dangers of close proximity crewing (CPC) and reported on a successful employment tribunal that concluded the 96-hour shift duty system breached the working time directive.
The union’s assistant general secretary Andy Dark then outlines what impact this case may have on negotiations nationally and committed the union to challenging unsafe duty systems wherever they may occur.
