The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) has urged voters in North Yorkshire to support local firefighter Steve Howley in his bid to become police and crime commissioner (PCC) for the area.
Ian Murray, the FBU executive council member for Yorkshire and Humberside and the union’s vice president, said: “It is vital for members in the area to get their family and friends to vote for Steve tomorrow. The current Tory PCC Julia Mulligan has supported plans for a police takeover of the fire and rescue service which would be a disaster for firefighters and the public.
“The people of North Yorkshire deserve a PCC who will stand up to the government and speak on their behalf. Not someone who has slavishly pushed through the Westminster government’s savage cuts to North Yorkshire Police.
“As PCC for North Yorkshire, Steve Howley will protect and invest in frontline policing and keep the identities of the police and fire service separate and distinct. He is by far the best candidate for the job.”
