The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) has condemned Tuesday’s terrorist attacks in Brussels and has sent a letter of support to the firefighters there, dealing with the fallout.
At least 34 people died after the attack on the Belgian capital which targeted the city's airport and Metro transit system. Terrorist group Isis have since claimed responsibility for the attack.
Matt Wrack, FBU general secretary, said: “The FBU utterly condemns these senseless and barbaric terrorist attacks, which have killed ordinary working people going about their lives. Our thoughts are with the families, friends and loved ones of those affected.
“Belgian firefighters are a source of pride and admiration in how they conducted themselves throughout the atrocity and took care of the dead and injured. FBU members had similar experiences with the 7/7 bombings when 52 innocent people were killed in a terror attack. The professionalism shown by Belgian firefighters is a credit to the country and will be recognised by firefighters around the world.
“Firefighters across the UK stand shoulder to shoulder with Belgium and pay tribute to the outstanding contribution the country’s emergency services make to the safety of its citizens.”
