The Fire Brigades Union has expressed opposition to a proposal by Tories on the London Assembly to withdraw free travel benefits from the families of Transport for London (TfL) workers and give them to firefighters instead.
A motion from the Tory group calling for the switch will be tabled at a meeting of the assembly today.
Paul Embery, secretary of the FBU in London, said: “There is a strong case for giving free travel benefits to firefighters however we are not prepared to betray our colleagues on the transport network.
“Instead of pitting one group of workers against another the Tories should show respect for all those who work hard in the service of Londoners.
“The FBU doesn’t play divide and rule.”
