The FBU has published a domestic abuse policy document in order to help officials negotiate a local policy to raise awareness within their fire and rescue service.
Samantha Rye, secretary of the FBU national women’s committee, said: “Domestic violence is abhorrent and repugnant. Perpetrators should feel the full weight of the law against them.
“The FBU is committed to the health, safety and welfare of all members and seek to support any member, women or men, who may experience problems relating to domestic violence.
“The National Women’s Committee wanted to develop this model policy to assist brigade officials to negotiate a local policy which will help to improve the lives for members and raise awareness of the issues associated with domestic abuse and sexual violence.”
