Former firefighter and national FBU official Kerry Baigent (pictured above) today begins her employment tribunal case against Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service for constructive dismissal.
The case sees the former secretary of the FBU national women’s committee claim that avoidable decisions by senior management directly led to her having no option other than to reluctantly resign after a 21 year career she loved, bravely protecting the people of Cambridgeshire.
Cameron Matthews, secretary of the FBU in Cambridgeshire, said: “All the firefighters who served on the frontline alongside Kerry know she loved her job as a firefighter and we know full-well that her treatment by decision-makers in the service left her with no choice other than to leave.
“Kerry joined the fire and rescue service 21 years ago. For more than two decades, both as a serving firefighter and union official, Kerry championed the profession and the cause of women working in the fire and rescue service. That did not always win her friends in high places.
“The FBU are supporting Kerry’s case and all of us who have served alongside her hope that Kerry can win the justice she deserves and that by her bravely taking this on, her legacy may also be to prevent other firefighters suffering such a harrowing, career-ending experience. Many of us will be attending the employment tribunal to show Kerry our support.”
