Writing in The Times newspaper David Cameron has once again compared himself to a firefighter.
This follows his boast last week in North Yorkshire that he was a firefighter putting out a blaze in government that the previous administration had started.
In response FBU general secretary Matt Wrack has written an open letter to The Times explaining why the analogy has angered firefighter who feel they have been stabbed in the back by the prime minister.
Matt Wrack writes: “On his last night of campaigning before the 2010 general election Cameron stopped at Carlisle fire station – after all it’s a great photo opportunity – and assured the people there and the wider public that he would be protecting front line services. The reality is quite different.
“Since then more than 5,000 firefighter jobs have been cut and more than 40 fire stations have closed. Ask anyone actually working on the front line and they will tell you that the service is worse today than it was; our jobs are made harder.”
Wrack continues: “He appears content to attack firefighters in the real world while pretending to be one on the campaign trail.”
