The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service stands accused this week of health and safety breaches that contributed to the death of firefighter Ewan Williamson in 2009, as a trial gets underway.
Ewan was involved in operations at the Balmoral Bar, Edinburgh, as part of the then Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service, before becoming trapped.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service faces three charges under the health and safety at work act including a failure to prioritise Ewan’s rescue and a failure to properly train firefighters how to tackle basement fires.
Roddy Robertson, executive council member for the FBU in Scotland, said: “After more than five years since the tragedy we are pleased this case is finally coming to trial.
“Although nothing can bring Ewan back, we hope that the evidence which comes out will allow all concerned to learn lessons which can prevent a similar tragedy from happening in the future.
“The FBU will continue to support firefighters throughout this difficult period.”
