The Fire Brigades Union exhibited a stall, held a fringe meeting and put on the Ring of Fire show at this year’s annual Labour party conference in Manchester.
The stall was packed out with visitors eager to hear about, and get a copy of, the union’s new report Sounding the alarm: the future of our fire and rescue service about the impact austerity has had on the fire and rescue service.
The report calls for investment and not cuts to the fire and rescue service over the next parliament.
The FBU London region held a fringe meeting, Boris Johnson – Life after London, to discuss the mayor’s legacy and his future as he seeks a comeback to the House of Commons.
Speakers at the event included Paul Embery, FBU London secretary, Tessa Jowell MP, former Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Sadiq Khan MP, shadow justice secretary, Fiona Twycross, London assembly member and Seb Dance MEP for London.
Manchester also played host to the Ring of Fire show which has been making its way throughout the country calling for investment into the fire and rescue service, not cuts.
The FBU will also have a presence at the Conservative and Liberal Democrats party conferences over the coming weeks.
