Politicians from across the political divide have called for proposals that would see Brighton and Hove lose firefighters and a fire engine to be rejected.
The cross-party letter asks all members of the East Sussex Fire Authority to vote down the proposals at its meeting on the 5 June as well as instructing its chief fire officer to draw up alternative plans that does not involve reducing frontline services.
Simon Herbert, chair of the Fire Brigades Union in East Sussex, who helped draft the letter , said: “Firefighters are determined to prevent these unacceptable proposals which would put lives at risk.
“There is a rare moment of political unity in our city; almost everyone thinks this is a bad idea.
“East Sussex Fire Authority must now reject these proposals and put local safety first.”
Signatories of the letter include Conservative Party MP Simon Kirby, Green Party MP Caroline Lucas as well as The Labour Party’s prospective parliamentary candidates Nancy Platts, Peter Kyle, Puma Sen and Green candidate Davy Jones.
