One in six firefighters jobs could be lost in East Sussex after the fire authority approved cuts on Thursday 5 June.
The move will also see fire engines axed at the Preston Circus station in Brighton and The Ridge station in Hastings.
A vigorous campaign organised by local Fire Brigade Union officials saw a petition against the cuts gaining over 10,000 signatures as well as a number of politicians of different parties signing an open letter opposing the changes.
Simon Herbert, chair of the FBU in East Sussex said: “This decision will compromise public safety, increasing response times and hampering firefighters ability to protect the public.
“The fire authority have ignored the 10,000 people who signed the petition condemning these cuts as well as a group of cross-party politicians who opposed these plans.
“This is devastating news for East Sussex firefighters, their families and the public.”
