Members and supporters of the Fire Brigades Union in Cambridgeshire will be hosting a rally on 12 June during the union’s first 24-hour strike action in their campaign to protect firefighters’ pensions.
The rally will begin at 11:30am at Cambridge fire station and from 12:30pm there will be a street campaign to raise awareness with the public and issuing leaflets.
The rally will then march to the Guild Hall in Cambridge city hall.
Cameron Matthews, brigade secretary of the FBU in Cambridgeshire, said: “66% of our firefighters are faced with the prospect of the sack without their pension because of these proposed changes, which is clearly unacceptable.
“Members are hoping to convey the truly appalling treatment that firefighters have suffered at the hands of this government who just months ago were eager to be seen patting firefighters on the back for their work during the flooding.
“This week the fire minister is stealing their pensions and their family’s futures.
“Current proposals are unachievable, unaffordable and unfair. Firefighters just want a fair deal for the £4000 they personally pay into their pensions every year.”
Members of the FBU will be on strike for 24 hours from 9am on Thursday 12 June and from 10am to 5pm on Saturday 21 June.
Industrial action short of a strike will also be taking place between 12 – 22 June incorporating a refusal to undertake voluntary overtime and not training strikebreakers.
