Barry Downey, FBU brigade secretary for Staffordshire, has been elected to represent West Midlands region firefighters on the union’s executive council.
The executive council supervises the management of the FBU, and is made up of an elected official from each region.
Barry will be taking over from his predecessor Rose Jones, who is retiring. Barry has served in the fire service for almost 25 years. His first post came in 1989 in Essex.
Barry said: “I am so proud to be elected to serve the fantastic members of the FBU in the West Midlands. I’d like to thank Rose Jones for her hard work and dedication during her term.
“I look forward to carrying on her good work and representing every West Midland region member throughout the next four years.
“It has been an honour to have served as a brigade official in Staffordshire, and I would like to thank all those who nominated me.
“My priorities are to represent the FBU in the West Midlands region to the best of my abilities, to grow regional membership of both wholetime and retained firefighters, and to campaign robustly for the defence of our fire service through a time of unprecedented attacks.”
