Broxbourne MP Charles Walker has spoken in support of a firefighter sacked for discussing strikes over firefighter pensions on social media.
Campaigners across the country have argued for Cheshunt firefighter Ashley Brown, a father of three, to be reinstated.
Walker told the Hertfordshire Mercury: “Ashley has been a firefighter for 26 years and has an unblemished record.
“He fully admits to having made a mistake, which he has apologised for.
“I don’t think what I have seen is a ‘hanging offence’.
“I hope common sense prevails and he is given the opportunity to return to the job he loves.”
Keith Handscomb, who represents firefighters across East Anglia, said: “The FBU is heartened by the recent press statement in support for our members and Ashley Brown made by Charles Walker MP.
“Firefighters have been lobbying councillors and MPs across Hertfordshire to review the case. The FBU doesn’t want to add anything more at this point but wants the elected representatives to concentrate on the details of the case and to do the right and just thing.”
Walker added: “Pensions are changing across the public sector and I hope there is the opportunity for further negotiations between the Government and FBU to iron out the disagreements that remain.”
