The Fire Brigades Union is holding elections for a new vice-president.
The position is responsible for presiding over union meetings, including those of the executive council when the president — currently Alan McLean — is absent, as well as any other duties assigned by the exec.
According to the union’s rule book, the position is open to any existing exec member who has served in position for at least two years and who has been an FBU member for at least five years continuously.
Former vice-presidents can be nominated, although the current holder, Jim Barbour, who represents N Ireland on the exec, is not re-standing.
The position is elected for a four-year term. Once elected, vice-presidents continue with their responsibilities as an exec member and must re-stand to represent their region when their term is over, even if their vice-presidential term is not complete.
Candidates can be nominated by any branch across the UK, and will then be chosen by a ballot of all FBU members.
Nomination forms have now been sent to branches across the UK.
Forms should be completed and returned to the general secretary, Fire Brigades Union, Bradley House, 68 Coombe Road, Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, KT2 7AE.
Forms must be received no later than noon on Wednesday 28 May 2014, so branches have been advised that they should post them at least one week before the closing date to ensure their inclusion in the final count.
All nominations received from branches will be acknowledged by head office. It is therefore essential that branches’ postal addresses are included in full.
