nternational Women’s Day takes place on Saturday 8 March, and The UN theme for this year is “Equality for Women is Progress for All”.
Between 12 and 14 March, representatives from the Fire Brigades Union will be taking part in the TUC’s Women’s conference at Congress House in London.
The FBU has submitted two motions to the conference. In the first, the union calls upon the TUC women’s committee and affiliates to lobby UK Government’s and MP’s in support of the FBU’s campaign to achieve an affordable and workable occupational pension scheme for firefighters.
The second highlights the problems experienced by women in Afghanistan, where the government is considering the reintroduction of public stoning as punishment for adultery and has never ratified a long-awaited law setting penalties for rape, child marriage and “Baad” the local term used for the giving of girls to resolve disputes.
The motion calls on the TUC to campaign vigorously to raise the plight of women in Afghanistan, support sister organizations that are working against the oppression of women and girls in Afghanistan and lobby UK Governments to ensure that they work hard against any practice in Afghanistan, proposed or otherwise, that serves to oppress the women of Afghanistan.
