A mass picnic and festival will be held at Catcliffe Recreation Ground on the anniversary of the ‘Battle of Orgreave’, campaigners have announced.
The event, taking place between 11am and 7pm on Saturday 14 June, has been organised by the Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign and the Justice for Mineworkers Campaign, and will feature speakers, live music, stalls and refreshments.
The Battle of Orgreave was an infamous confrontation between around 5,000 police officers and 10,000 striking miners at the steel coking plant in South Yorkshire. 113 people were injured during on the day and 92 arrested South Yorkshire Police later paid £425,000 in compensation and £100,000 in legal costs to to some of those arrested, although no officers were ever disciplined for misconduct.
