Responding to news that Lee Howell, chief fire officer of Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Authority, has been appointed a fire and rescue advisor for the Welsh Government while continuing his position in Devon and Somerset part time, Welsh region FBU executive council member Grant Mayos said: “This move does raise concerns for Welsh firefighters.
“Historically, Welsh fire and rescue advisor positions have been filled by recently-retired chief fire officers who can dedicate their time to the job in hand.
“Fire services in Devon and Somerset are currently undergoing unprecedented cuts in the face of widespread public opposition, a task that surely will demand the full attention of a full-time fire chief.
“Given such huge demands on his time, how will Welsh fire and rescue services be affected?”
