Responding to the All-Party Parliamentary Group on the Homeland Security report, Improving Efficiency, Interoperability and Resilience of our Blue Light Services, Fire Brigades Union general secretary, Matt Wrack, said:
“The Fire Brigades Union has pioneered genuine improvements within fire services for decades, and we’re interested to see the authors of this report share our concerns over the need for better coordinated training and planning for large or concurrent emergencies.
“But discussions on the future of emergency services must include the expert voice of firefighters themselves.
“On top of this, the greatest threat to the UK’s capacity to cope with large emergencies is ongoing and unprecedented funding cuts, which are leading to fire station closures as well as fewer fire fighters and fire engines across the country.”
