You will have read about the dreadful factory collapse in Dhaka, Bangladesh yesterday and where the death toll is rising by the hour. Many of those killed were young women who worked in the five garment factories that operated in the building, women who were making clothes for the UK High Street.
War on Want, together with our partner in Bangladesh the National Garment Workers Federation (NGWF), pay tribute and respect to all of the people that have lost their lives in the collapse of the Rana Plaza building. We stand in solidarity with the families of the victims and the injured and we hope that the hundreds that are still trapped under the rubble will be rescued as a matter of urgency. NGWF activists are on the ground together with garment workers, relatives and friends taking part in the rescue operation.
I am writing to ask if you would sign on to our petition. We are asking you to take action now and demand that UK high street brands take responsibility for this tragedy by paying full compensation to the workers and their families and commit to take action to ensure disasters like this become a thing of the past.
Please sign the petition (link expired) and please forward this to your contacts.
Best Wishes
