Paul Trew, Hampshire FBU brigade secretary said:
“The Hampshire Fire Brigades Union is satisfied with the verdict arrived at. Though the inquest is now concluded, both families will continue to receive full support from the FBU.
“It is hoped that the recommendations from this inquest are implemented at the earliest opportunity. This is the first loss of a firefighter’s life at an operational incident within Hampshire since the Second World War. We sincerely hope it will be the last.
“It is now over 2 years since the tragic fire at Shirley Towers, Southampton. During the intervening period, Hampshire fire and rescue service and regional Fire Brigade Union officials have carried out a thorough accident investigation into the events of April 6th 2010. This investigation has been part of the evidence gathered for use by the Coroner at the inquest.
“During this period, FBU officials have worked closely with Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service accident investigation team.
“This tragedy has touched and affected all members of HFRS. Since their deaths, Hampshire FBU have supported Alan and Jim’s families. Both firefighters were valued members of the Fire Brigades Union, and are still sorely missed by their colleagues.”
