Firefighters who attended the Grenfell Tower fire have settled claims for £20m in the High Court.
The 114 affected firefighters were given legal support through the FBU and its law firm Thompsons. They suffered personal injury and loss caused by alleged negligence and breach of statutory duty. Some were left unable to work again due to severe trauma.
The defendants in the claim included Arconic Architectural Products, Celotex and Rydon Maintenance Limited: the companies that made the combustible cladding and designed and built the refurbishment to the exterior of the building. Other defendants included the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and the London fire commissioner.
This year will mark the seventh anniversary since 72 people were killed and many residents were left injured and homeless. The public inquiry into the circumstances around and leading up to the fire is expected to provide its final report in the coming months.
The settlement for the firefighters follows a High Court settlement earlier this year for nearly 900 cases on behalf of the bereaved, survivors and residents affected by the tragedy.
The FBU continues to support survivors and the bereaved in calls for justice and accountability, and with leaseholders campaigning for safe homes.
