The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) is the voice of firefighters in the UK, representing uniformed front line emergency staff of the fire and rescue services.  We are the only recognised trade union negotiating nationally for firefighters and emergency fire control staff.  

About this Role

This is a key role, supporting the Head of Finance in the effective performance and management of the day-to-day operations of the Finance function.  You will be a qualified accountant with at least 2 years' post-qualification experience, ideally gained in a membership or not-for-profit organisation.  You will deliver robust financial control, support strategic planning, and help drive organisational compliance and performance through budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting

This is an opportunity to help shape and develop the Finance function and team.  You can influence the direction we take.  You will be adept and experienced in implementing processes from a standing start and, of course, your accounting skills will be second to none.

We are looking for:

  • Fully qualified accountant (CIPFA/ACA/ACCA/CIMA).  Part qualified with significant relevant experience may be considered.
  • Solid accounting systems experience and knowledge – Access Dimensions, Payroll, CRM database implementation
  • At least 2 years’ experience in a Management Accountant or similar financial role
  • Experience of preparing monthly management accounts and financial reports.
  • Budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning experience.
  • Experience analysing financial performance and providing recommendations to improve profitability and efficiency.
  • Experience supporting audits and ensuring compliance with financial regulations
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, organisational and time management skills, coupled with excellent attention to detail and accuracy. 
  • Flexible attitude towards work. A team player with a “can do” attitude and a passion for excellence
  • Ability to communicate complex financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders and senior colleagues. 

Full details of the job are set out in the Job Description. The main duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Supporting the Head of Finance to ensure the production of all summary financial information
  • Supporting the Head of Finance in producing the year end accounts for the Financial Report
  • Providing support during the annual budget preparation and audit processes 
  • Assist in the preparation of VAT returns and complying with HMRC requirements
  • Assist with the month-end reconciliation and close processes, including accruals, prepayments, fixed assets, investments, AIF, lottery, contributions and other accounting adjustments
  • Assist with the monthly reconciliation of credit and debit cards 
  • Work with the Head of Finance to ensure efficient and accurate processes for purchase ledger, including Head Office and Regional invoices
  • Assist with the timely and accurate processing of the monthly payroll and expenses

The role is based at the FBU head office in London. There may at times be some travel and the need to occasionally work non-standard hours, as you would expect in a role like this.
