Even when you leave the Fire & Rescue Service you can stay connected to the Fire Brigades Union by becoming a Retired and Out of Trade (ROOT) member.

Being a ROOT member also makes sure you will continue to receive support related to your fire and rescue service employment.

To be eligible for ROOT membership you MUST have been a fully paid-up member of the FBU at the cessation of your employment in the Fire & Rescue Service.

If you are planning to leave the service soon, or if you left less than 6 months ago, your membership can be directly transferred to ROOT membership.

If you left the service more than 6 months ago your application will be sent to the relevant Brigade Committee for approval. This process can take up to 28 days.

  • ROOT membership contributions are £24 per year (as of 2026), collected in single annual payment by direct debit.
  • ROOT members can receive assistance under Rules A2(4) and A2(9). This covers Union and legal representation for matters relating to their fire and rescue employment.
  • ROOT members cannot hold union office or have voting rights, but they are able to receive all relevant union communications such as the union magazine and circulars.
