Dear Brother/Sister

Bank Holiday claim – 8 May 2023

You will be aware that a national bank holiday has been declared for the 8 May 2023 in respect of the coronation of King Charles III which will take place on Saturday 6 May 2023

At its meeting on 11 November, the Executive Council agreed that a claim should be submitted to the national employers seeking agreement that 8 May 2023 would be considered an additional public holiday for all Grey Book personnel.

Accordingly, a claim letter has been sent to the national employers’ joint secretary which reads:

Dear Naomi,

Additional day’s holiday (public holiday) 8 May 2023 – Coronation of King Charles III

You will be aware that it has been declared that Monday 8 May 2023 will be a national bank holiday.

The Prime Minister in making the announcement referred to the matters in these terms:

“The Coronation of a new monarch is a unique moment for our country. In recognition of this historic occasion, I am pleased to announce an additional bank holiday for the whole United Kingdom next year.”

“I look forward to seeing people come together to celebrate and pay tribute to King Charles III by taking part in local and national events across the country in his honour.”

Therefore, the FBU makes a claim on behalf of the employees’ side of the NJC, and seeks agreement for the award of an additional public holiday for all Grey Book personnel and that the award should reflect the same arrangements in respect of all other public holidays as detailed in the Scheme of Conditions of Service via the NJC.

In short, we seek an agreement to mirror that which was made in respect of the bank holiday that took place on 19 September 2022 for the state funeral of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

It is hoped that this matter can be addressed and agreed via the national joint secretaries as soon as possible so as to enable local employers to put the appropriate measures in place.

I look forward to receiving the employers’ side’s response to this matter.

We will inform all FBU members as soon as possible of the outcome of these discussions with the employers.

Yours in unity.

Andy Dark
Assistant General Secretary
