Dear Brother/ Sister

BLACK & ETHNIC MINORITY MEMBERS (B&EMM) SCHOOL 2022

The FBU is pleased to announce that the Black and Ethnic Minority Members (B&EMM) section residential school is due to take place Friday 7th October – Sunday 9th October 2022.

The school will take place at Wortley Hall, near Sheffield, S35 7DB https://www.wortleyhall.org.uk  It will begin at approximately 12:00 with lunch on the Friday, finishing on the Sunday at approximately 14:00 with lunch.  The exact timings will be confirmed in writing to those attending.

Open to all FBU members of Black and ethnic heritage, the school is a key educational workshop in the B&EMM calendar.  This year the focus will be on recognising the history of B&EMM within the FBU structure, understanding the mechanics of the FBU alongside other trade unions, and understanding and building upon the importance of the B&EMM network across all thirteen regions of the FBU.  Additionally, the school is an important tool for establishing and building relationships with firefighters from across the UK and developing valuable support networks within the B&EMM family.

B&EMM School has become renowned for its ability to educate and empower in a welcoming, safe, environment, providing a varied catalogue of guest speakers and daily workshops that allow for free expression, creativity and improved self-development. This school will be no different. The school will also include evening activities that encourage networking with members from around the country.

The school will also give those attending the opportunity to discuss and evaluate the impact of recent societal changes and how these changes have impacted upon work life and personal health in general.

We encourage applications from all those from Black and ethnic heritage.  In particular, we encourage applications from women, those who have not attended a school in the past and those looking to develop or build on their current union knowledge and activism.

Accommodation is provided for the entirety of the school, along with all meals. Reasonable travel expenses will also be reimbursed. Those on duty should apply for trade union leave as necessary via their appropriate Brigade rep.

The application form is attached and the closing date for requests for places is Friday 9 September.  Please send your application form as soon as possible to [email protected] as places will fill up.

If you would like to discuss attending the school or for further information, please contact:

  • your local B&EMM rep
  • the B&EMM National Secretary Amit Malde 07949778810 [email protected]
  • the B&EMM National Chair Karen Bell 07956915433 [email protected]
  • or see https://linktr.ee/FBU_B&EMM

Applications will be endorsed by Head Office in conjunction with Regional Secretaries and the B&EMM National Officials. All applications will be acknowledged and we will confirm after the closing date those applicants that have successfully secured a place at this year’s School.

Yours in unity

Matt Wrack
