Statement in Respect of Labour Party Dismissals from Front Bench
At the Executive Council meeting held on Friday 29 July, the Executive Council agreed the following:
‘FBU statement 29 July 2022 - Labour Front Bench Must Support Strikes
The Executive Council met today and discussed events that have unfolded in relation to the Labour Party’s leaderships distinct lack of support for unions taking strike action.
The Executive Council is appalled that shadow ministers are being threatened and sacked for standing in solidarity with strikers on picket lines. Although the Labour Party’s leadership is struggling to maintain a consistent line for why ministers are being subjected to these actions, it is apparent that it is in response to the support shown to workers that are on strike and standing on picket lines across the UK.
The Executive Council has called for the leadership to show support to the class the Labour Party was created to represent and to the manner in which our elected representatives show their solidarity to those fighting for a more equal society.
The Executive Council strongly condemns the actions of the current leadership and calls upon the NEC and wider parliamentary labour party to revisit the decisions and more fundamentally, to re-orientate policy towards supporting workers taking action to maintain and improve their terms and conditions.
Although at that time there had been only one dismissal i.e. that of Sam Tarry MP, the wording was agreed to account for any subsequent dismissals that may take place.
